Kei Koizumi

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy

Dr. Kei Koizumi is a nationally and internationally recognized science policy leader who has made significant contributions in advancing the broader impacts of science and engineering. He is an American policy advisor serving as the chief of staff for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. He previously served as a senior advisor on science policy for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) after serving as a senior advisor to the National Science and Technology Council under President Obama.

Before serving on the Obama-Biden transition team in 2008-2009, Kei was the Director of the R&D Budget and Policy Program at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), where he was the principal budget analyst, editor, and writer for the annual AAAS reports on federal R&D and the continually updated analyses of federal R&D on the AAAS R&D web site.

In his previous and current White House roles, Kei has continually fought to ensure that broader impacts were given equal footing to intellectual merit as a part of the NSF merit review process. He has also been a strong proponent for and has actively encouraged other federal agencies to include an assessment of broader impacts in their award review process.
